I am thrilled to share the news of a $13 million funding boost for the Library announced today by the Premier of Victoria to support the Library’s Vision 2020 redevelopment project.
The John and Myriam Wylie Foundation has donated $8 million to reopen the Library’s Russell Street entrance and transform the eastern end of the building with a new world-class exhibition gallery and state-of-the-art collaborative spaces, along with a vibrant cafe and retail area. The Victoria Gallery will focus on telling the state’s stories by showcasing the best of the Library’s collection along with items from other institutions and private collections.
The Andrews Government has also committed an additional $5 million to enhance all Library entrances and surrounding streetscapes through a combination of digital and physical interventions. These will spark the curiosity of visitors and passers-by, bringing new energy to a quiet part of our city. This funding will also be used to increase access to the Library with a new universally accessible entrance on La Trobe Street.
These projects will bring enormous benefits to our community of creators and scholars, and I look forward to further collaboration with you in helping to bring the gallery to life.
