Keeping a lookout: libraries supporting vulnerable communities

Thursday 7 December 2017, State Library Victoria (VRT)

The program will highlight public libraries’ role in supporting socially isolated members of our community – showcasing international programs, new ideas and innovative outreach practices; demonstrating the tremendous power of partnership approaches and deep community engagement in successful program design and delivery.

You’ll hear presentations about:

  • READ Nepal, which began in 1991 after a rural villager told their founder that all he wanted for his village was a library. Since then they have created a network of public libraries across the country to provide access to information and economic opportunities so that Nepalis can work towards a better future

  • Buk bilong Pikinini, which supports Papua New Guinean children with access to high quality books and literacy programs. They do this by establishing community libraries and by making book donations to re-establish depleted school libraries.

  • Australian and Victorian library initiatives reaching indigenous communities and recently arrived non-English speaking migrants and refugees

Don’t miss this fantastic professional development opportunity, provided by the Learn and Lead Program in the SLV/PLVN Statewide Public Library Development Projects.  Catering will be provided.  Bookings are now open
